This Forum session examined Medicare’s proposed rule on the Shared Savings Program and Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) and the Pioneer ACO model proposed by the Medicare Innovation Center. Jonathan Blum, deputy administrator and director of the Center for Medicare in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), outlined the proposed rule and the issues CMS addressed in defining ACOs and the Shared Savings Program. Patricia Briggs, chief executive officer of Northwest Physicians Network, an independent physician association in Tacoma, Washington, and Thomas Schlesinger, PhD, executive consultant at Gundersen Lutheran Health System, an integrated delivery system in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, discussed how their respective organizations incorporate ACO-like concepts and whether the CMS ACO model is consistent with their approaches to organizing and improving care.
